I’m a huge fan of Matt Newport’s product designs. Matt and his former company, Black Lion Audio (BLA), forged a path that enabled the masses to finally get that ‘big studio’ sound they were looking for out of their modest home recording equipment, through expertly designed modifications to existing digital recording equipment.

After an inordinate amount of research I stumbled upon two pieces of equipment that have made listening to 2-channel high-resolution files on long and frequent flights both a reality and a pleasure: (1) JH Audio JH 13 Custom In-Ear Monitor and (2) AK100 portable high-resolution player. Read more »

How did you develop your ear?

I went out to dinner with a friend of mine last night. This friend is a very successful guitarist/instrumentalist who currently plays in a legendary rock band that tours the world. I’m not saying this to name drop…I’m humbled by his ability and I was a fan of his work way before we got know each other. We both talked about being kids and sitting in front our parents’ stereos and listening to the radio or records for hours upon hours...subsequently learning to ‘listen’ and ‘feel’ the music (i.e. developing our ear). Just back from London, England! Music Valet is in full gear nailing down the next record that we're going to give the proper 5.1 treatment. I made a list some time ago of records I thought deserved a 5.1 mix, and there's more than a few British artists that make up the list.
